KIP Protocol: Empowering the Future of Decentralized AI

·

The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) and blockchain technology has given rise to a transformative trend: decentralized AI, often referred to as deAI. At the forefront of this movement is KIP Protocol, an innovative infrastructure platform designed to empower AI developers to deploy and monetize their products within the Web3 ecosystem.

In a detailed discussion with Julian Peh, CEO and Co-Founder of KIP Protocol, we explore the vision, technological foundations, and strategic direction of this pioneering project.

The Vision Behind KIP Protocol

What inspired the creation of KIP Protocol, and how does it aim to transform the decentralized AI landscape?

Since 2019, our team has been actively engaged in commercial operations within AI, machine learning, and big data, serving renowned global organizations such as the World Bank.

Over the past two years, however, we observed a troubling trend: the AI sector has become heavily monopolized. A handful of corporations now leverage collective public data and knowledge to train their massive models, maintaining complete control over the regulatory and developmental processes.

This centralization poses a significant threat. If left unchecked, we risk a future where individuals are mere consumers of AI, stripped of economic participation and ownership rights—even though these very models are trained on our data.

We realized that decentralizing AI is not just an option but a necessity. To have a voice in an AI-driven future, everyone must reclaim ownership. That conviction drove us to build KIP Protocol. We identified a critical gap in infrastructure and tools for AI developers seeking to create decentralized AI products.

Our platform enables developers to deploy and monetize their work on Web3. Already, we have supported large-scale projects on KIP Protocol, and our infrastructure is flexible enough to accommodate independent developers. By addressing fundamental challenges in deployment, connectivity, and monetization, we aim to attract a broad community of AI developers into Web3, catalyzing growth across the entire decentralized AI ecosystem.

Focusing on Deployment and Monetization

Many decentralized AI projects emphasize decentralized inference or AI agents. Why does KIP Protocol concentrate on deployment and monetization?

KIP Protocol’s ultimate goal is to bring a massive base of AI end-users into Web3. To achieve this, we first need a diverse range of high-quality AI products to attract and serve these users.

This is why we focus on three core components of AI value creation: applications, models, and data. Together, these elements form functional AI products.

Monetization is a cornerstone of digital ownership. Without solving the revenue challenge, decentralized AI would remain a niche interest. There are far more AI developers globally than blockchain developers. By streamlining monetization, we can draw these developers into Web3, where they will, in turn, attract users.

Our objective is to foster a vibrant, revenue-driven commercial ecosystem for decentralized AI. Only then can the sector achieve stability and sustainable growth.

The Three Pillars of AI Value Creation

Can you elaborate on the roles of AI applications, models, and data, and how they reflect KIP Protocol’s unique approach?

Building a user-ready AI product requires integrating AI models with applications—such as chatbots that relay user instructions to models—and, depending on the use case, external datasets. Thus, an AI product is a combination of models, applications, and data.

A key insight is that in a fair and competitive ecosystem, these components are typically owned and developed by different parties. Model creators, app developers, and data owners often possess distinct skills and commercial motivations.

KIP Protocol envisions an ecosystem where models, applications, and data can interoperate permissionlessly—even under separate ownership—to deliver diverse, useful AI products to end-users. Crucially, each contributor can share in the generated revenue.

Solving Technical Challenges in Monetization

What technical hurdles do AI developers face in decentralizing monetization, and how does KIP Protocol address them?

When developers seek to deploy fully functional decentralized AI products, they can leverage KIP Protocol’s合约 and infrastructure to resolve three foundational issues:

  1. Deployment: Easily tokenize and apply token-gating to AI assets like applications, models, and datasets.
  2. Connectivity: Ensure seamless data flow between models, applications, and assets, even when owned by different parties.
  3. Monetization: Accurately record, account for, and settle interactions between AI assets, regardless of ownership.

By tackling these challenges, KIP Protocol enables the creation of a commercial ecosystem where developers are not only able to deploy but also get paid fairly.

Our technical stack comprises five key components:

An early version of KIP’s infrastructure won the Tencent Cloud Award at the 2023 Chainlink Hackathon. As experienced AI developers, we built the tools and infrastructure we needed but couldn’t find elsewhere.

Automating Revenue Sharing with Transparency

What mechanisms exist within KIP Protocol to automate revenue sharing among app developers, model makers, and data owners while ensuring transparency?

When deploying an AI asset—whether a model, application, or dataset—developers set a per-query price recorded in the token metadata. When a user interacts with an application connected to models and/or datasets, they pay the sum of all associated query prices.

For example, if an app charges 0.1 $KIP per query, a model charges 0.2 $KIP, and a dataset charges 0.3 $KIP, the user pays 0.6 $KIP total. This amount is automatically distributed to each contributor via KIP Protocol’s smart contracts.

This approach allows market forces to operate freely. If a data owner prices access at 10 $KIP per query, they may find customers if their data is truly rare and valuable. However, competition may drive price adjustments.

Thus, KIP Protocol ensures fair revenue distribution through transparent, automated smart contracts.

Strategic Focus on the Education Sector

KIP recently announced advancements in its partnership with Open Campus. Why is an infrastructure provider like KIP so focused on education?

We partnered with Animoca Brands’ Open Campus to launch Open Campus U, an AI-powered educational platform serving professors, universities, and students.

Education is an $8 trillion market involving hundreds of millions of participants. The application of AI in education is both evident and impactful. Since 2019, we have provided AI services to universities, giving us deep familiarity with this sector.

Open Campus and KIP Protocol share aligned goals. By integrating KIP’s cutting-edge AI technology, we aim to unlock new opportunities for educators to thrive in the digital economy, meeting the evolving needs of learners and teachers worldwide.

We seek to enhance educational quality through adaptive, personalized experiences. Blockchain technology can empower educators by allowing them to transform knowledge into ownable, tradable, and monetizable assets.

We are excited about these opportunities and are dedicating significant resources to deploy KIP within education via Open Campus U. Stay tuned for further announcements.

Innovations and Experimental Features

Can you discuss experimental aspects of the protocol, such as decentralized Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF) and check nodes? What potential impact might these have on the broader AI and blockchain ecosystems?

KIP is already equipped to serve AI product developers and attract users to Web3. However, we continuously explore ways to engage more end-users directly in the decentralized AI ecosystem. Raising awareness about digital产权 in AI is essential, and practical participation is the best method.

We are experimenting with incentivizing end-user engagement through activities like RLHF or model evaluation. The goal is to fairly reward all users for their economic participation, transforming them into capital owners in the AI-driven future.

Greater participation—from both product developers and end-users—will enhance the robustness of the decentralized AI ecosystem KIP is building.

Upcoming Developments

What recent progress or upcoming milestones can you share?

The next four to eight weeks will be filled with product launches and community activities. KIP will soon onboard a leading entertainment AI platform with a substantial user base into Web3. This is incredibly exciting and will significantly expand our active user community.

Building on our partnership with Open Campus, we will also establish a deep collaboration with another major Web3 project, becoming their official AI partner to propose and implement AI use cases.

Lastly, we previously released an NFT collection and will initiate a long-awaited plan to integrate these NFTs into a broader, long-term membership program codenamed “KIPVERSE.”
